BARRY HOLLAND (SIFU)

Chief Instructor

Barry has a background with the military, having served 10 years in the armed forces. Since leaving the army in 1989 Barry has spent many years coaching individuals and businesses in a variety of areas. After spending many years in the corporate world of solution sales and business development working with and selling to, some of the largest household names across several sectors, Barry decided to change direction, gaining a Life Coaching qualification and embarking on his martial arts journey.

Barry has practiced a wide variety of self defence systems and martial arts forms throughout his military and civilian life. After attaining a 2nd Degree Black Belt in Shotokan Karate, he decided to move to a reality based system and found Wing Chun to be the perfect combination of simplicity and directness without compromising its efficacy.

Barry met Si Gung Nik Gourgounidis and was taught traditional Wing Chun. Barry also trained in Shandong, China under Sifu Wang Meng. Since then his lifelong learning approach to growth has given him exposure to many martial arts including Brazilian Ju Jitsu, Jeet Kune Do, Krav Maga, Boxing, Shotokan Karate and Wing Chun.

In his own words “I believe self defence should be taught to everyone from a young age and I’m passionate about delivering measurable results, watching my students transform their skill sets in very compressed timescales. There is no upper age limit to learning new skills.

“There are myriad choices when it comes to martial arts but when it comes to self defence no single martial art works. Understanding the mentality of any perpetrator is key and observing a few principles rather than dozens of techniques will help to ensure long term retention of the acquired skill. For something to work it has to work for everyone, regardless of their level of fitness, physical stature or technical ability.”

Barry has several coaching qualifications, an Enhanced DBS check and carries Public Liability Insurance. His instruction is licensed under the British Martial Arts and Boxing Association. He is also a qualified Life Coach.
